Have you noticed that of the top 20 Poker Players in the world, at least half have advanced mathematical and/or advanced finance degrees ? It is no coincidence. Some of the most adept poker players on tour, have high mathematical acumen, and play the game of poker, using mathematical probabilities as the basis for much of their decision making during the game.

One of the prime areas of Texas Holdem, where probability or odds come into play, is after the two Pocket cards are dealt. You can increase your chances of winning (or alternatively, minimize your losses) in Texas Holdem, by being aware of the following 12 probabilities, once the two Pocket cards have been dealt. You should use these odds in helping you calculate the chances of you winning the hand, relative to what you hold, and the odds of your opponents holding a better hand, accordingly:

  • (1) – The odds of you or any other player receiving a pocket pair (for example, 8-Hearts, 8-Spades) is about 6 %.

  • (2) – The odds of you or any other player receiving two pocket cards of the same suit (for example, 8-Hearts, 4-Hearts) is about 24 %.

  • (3) – The odds of you or any other player receiving consecutive, suited pocket cards (for example, 8-Hearts, 9-Hearts) is about 4 %.

  • (4) – The odds of you or any other player receiving specifically pocket Aces or pocket Kings (for example, either Ace-Diamonds, Ace-Clubs OR King-Diamonds, King-Clubs) is about 0.9 %.

  • (5) – The odds of you or any other player receiving pocket Ace-King suited (for example, Ace-Spades, King-Spades) is about 0.3 %.

  • (6) – The odds of you or any other player receiving pocket Ace-King unsuited (for example, Ace-Hearts, King-Diamonds) is about 1.2 %.
  • (7) – The odds of you or any other player receiving one pocket Ace (for example, Ace-Hearts, 7-Diamonds) is about 16 %.

  • (8) – The odds of you or any other player receiving either pocket Aces, pocket Kings, pocket Queens, or pocket Jacks is about 1.8 %.

  • (9) – The odds of one of your opponents holding pocket Aces, if you receive pocket Kings is about 0.0004 %.

  • (10) – The odds of your hand receiving another Ace or King by the River card, when you have an Ace-King pocket duo is 50 %.

  • (11) – The odds of your pocket Queens holding up against an opponent’s pocket Ace-King through the River card is about 56 %.

  • (12) – The odds of you or any other player having both pocket cards being Jacks or better is about 9 %.
