Texas Hold'em Cash Games

Strategy plays a huge role in being a winning Texas Holdem

poker player. Things like knowing your opponents, reading

players, and understanding when and when not to bluff or

shift your playing style are keys to winning at texas holdem.

So how do you learn to do all that?

All of those things, and your Poker Strategy in general, play

off of one thing; know your poker odds. Knowing your poker

odds allows you to make decisions based on those odds in the

above mentioned ways. But if you don’t know or understand

your poker odds, you’re playing blind. And your opponents

will steal you blind.

An important part of understanding odds in texas holdem is

knowing how many outs you have at any given time. Outs are

the number of cards left that can give you a hand.

For example, if your hole cards are an Ace and a King and two of the

three cards on the flop are a Queen and a Ten, you understand that

there are four Jacks available, since there are four Jacks in each

deck. This means you have 4 outs with regard to hitting your Ace

high straight on the turn or river.

Here’s another example. You have a pocket pair. This means you

have two outs with regard to hitting a set (three of a kind, or

trips). That means the odds of flopping trips is about 8%.

If you miss, the odds of hitting it on the turn are about 4%.

You can figure out probability by dividing your outs by the

number of cards remaining.

If you need to hit two cards, the math gets a bit complicated but

you can use a basic rule of thumb in texas holdem instead. To

figure out roughly what the odds are of hitting your hand on the

flop, multiply your outs by 4. On the turn, multiply by 2. This

will give you a general idea of your odds for making your hand.

we’ll look at a number of other odds, such as pot odds and hand

probabilities (ie, the probability of getting pocket aces is 220 to 1!).
